Systemic lupus erythematosus is the most common form of lupus, a chronic autoimmune disease. Symptoms include fatigue, joint pain, and rashes on the nose and cheeks. Normally, the immune system fights infections and dangerous bacteria to keep the body healthy. An autoimmune disease occurs when the immune system attacks the body because it thinks it is something foreign. There are many autoimmune diseases, including systemic lupus erythematosus.
SLE is a chronic disease that can alternate between periods of worsening symptoms and periods of mild symptoms. Most people with SLE can lead normal lives with treatment.
